OK, I heard back from 8 of 9 parents, so here is the plan for this weekend:
1) We will in fact start practice at 5:30pm on Friday (1/9). Please plan on being there no later than 5:30, as I'm going to use the first 30 minutes of practice to go over some of the basics. We will move to the court at 6pm. Practice will end at 7pm.
2) We will hold an optional practice at 3:00pm on Saturday (1/10) at West Valley Elementary, which is located at 1635 Belleville Way. Sunnyvale, CA 94087. Here is a map to the school:

This optional practice will run ~1 hour.
3) My wife Sonya also coaches in the SASC competetive soccer program (U10 girls) and will be also be holding her first optional "Saturday Soccer" practice. This is a VERY informal hour spent scrimmaging, so the girls keep their soccer skills sharp. 6 of the girls on my basketball team play in the competetive soccer program, but all are welcome to attend. This will also be held at West Valley and will run from 2pm to 3pm. If you're daughter is interested, bring a pair of cleats and be there at 2pm.
If you have any questions, feel free to call my cell.
Thanks,
Coach Mike

Welcome
Welcome to the "Team Name TBD" Team Blog. I'm Coach Mike (Karsyn's dad). This is my third year coaching girls basketball in the Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League (SYBL).
I'll use this blog to communicate team information, such as practices dates times, game dates / times, other team events, photos, etc.. It's easy to post into to a place that will archive it for both you and I. Email announcements will be sent out from time to time, but if you need up to date info, this is a good place for it.
For your childs protection, I will not publish last names or any other personally identifiable info on this blog. Photos are always fun to share, so if you want to have them posted here, email them to me and I'll get them added. If you do NOT want your child's image posted on the blog, please let me know.
Please Note: This blog is open to the world, so anyone can access this information. Feel free to pass it on to any family and friends that might be interested in the info here.
Some things to think about:
1) For practices and games, I suggest that your child wear some form of tennis shoe or sneaker. Black soled sneakers are not allowed in either the practive facility or game facility.
2) Comfortable shorts are also nice for games. Since practices will be held in the evening, sweat pants can be convenient if it gets cold.
3) Team shirts will be distributed at the first practice. Our team color is TBD.
4) I'll let the girls pick out a team name, but we'll try to have it associated with whatever color we are issued (e.g. "The Green Avocados" or "Pink Panthers")
5) The girls should bring a bottle of water to both practices and games. Running around for an hour tends to dehydrate, so be prepared.
6) We'll setup a snack schedule for games, rotating amongst each family. Karsyn's mom Sonya will help to coordinate some of this. If your child has any dietary restrictions, please let one of us know.
7) One of the hardest skills for a new basketball player to pick up is dribbling the ball. If you have a basketball laying around the house, encourage your child to spend some of their free time just bouncing the ball around the backyard. Establishing a feel for the ball will make them more comfortable in practices and games. If you choose to make an investment in a new or used ball (not required), the girls will be playing with a "Junior" sized ball (or a 27.5" ball).
8) Since we only have one practice slot per week, attending practices is important. It's also easier to run through practices with a full squad (we only have 10 players). If you can't make a practice, please let me know ahead of time.
9) If the girls are interested in holding extra practices on a Sunday afternoon, we can arrange to meet at a local elementary school. This would be purely optional. We'll play this one by ear early on if there is any interest.
and finally
10) This league is all about learning the game, so I'll stress this throughout the season. Winning is nice, but I'll spend most of my time focusing on game fundamentals, good sportsmanship, team play and most of all, making this an enjoyable experience for everyone. Some of you played in the league last year (some on my team), so many of you are familiar with the intent of the league. I will try to implement more set plays this year which try to involve all 5 players on the floor. This means attending practice is important.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to shoot me an email or grab me at practice.
Looking forward to a great season,
Coach Mike

Position Diagram
Hi parents! I'm assigning a bit of homework before our first practice on 1/9. I know this will be the first time some of the girls will have played basketball, so I'll focus much of the season on fundamentals.
Please have you child take a look at the following diagram and have them try to memorize the position numbers. I'll be using these in our practices quite a bit, so we can help them develop some basics early on.
The diagram represents one half of a full basketball court (this is an aerial view looking down on the court). This "half court" diagram is layed out such that the basket is located at the top and center court is located at the bottom. There are 5 positions, numbered 1 through 5. We will be using these numbered positions as the foundation for the game.

If none of this makes any sense, don't worry, I'll run through it during practice.
